This makes for a gripping series of events – although some were difficult to sit with! Several twists made this book an exciting read, but the author’s note really put this piece of work into perspective. Paxton and Zinnia seek to infiltrate Cloud and learn to conform to the processes in order to rebel against it. The entire book is written into eleven distinct parts which take the reader on a journey through this data driven world – in which business supersedes wellbeing. This really defines the divide between corporate and civilian experiences. We learn that Gibson is beginning to take a backseat and allow his successor take charge. Other chapters are written by Gibson, founder of Cloud, as he comes down with an illness which means he faces increasingly losing control.

As they begin to work closer together, the reader learns more about both Paxton and Zinnia as individuals, but also the power of their relationship together. These two characters collide with each other and soon find out they have the same objective, and that perhaps two heads are better than one to dodge the surveillance of Cloud.

The book was primarily written from the POV of Paxton and Zinnia in alternating chapters. As every step and activity is tracked by watches worn by the civilians, every person became an employee in order to earn their quality of life. This dystopian novel leads the reader into a new way of living called the ‘Cloud’ which felt scarily close to the current climate as to how technology is becoming increasingly more integrated into our lives.

But, beneath the sunny exterior lurks something far more sinister. Here’s my thoughts:Ĭloud is a company which likes to keep its secrets – and it guards them well…Ī near-future thriller set in an America addicted to consumerism gun violence, climate change and unemployment have ravaged the nation, and an online retail giant named Cloud reigns supreme.Ĭloud brands itself not just as an online storefront, but as a global saviour.

This science fiction/dystopian grabbed my attention immediately and was getting a lot of praise from other like-minded readers. I was so pleased to have the opportunity to read something a little out of my norm.
